Why did Aliens Build the Pyramids?
29 April - 21 May 2011
Coinciding with Melbourne Museum's Tutankhamen and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs mega-exhibition, Why Did Aliens Build the Pyramids? investigates alternative origins of one of Earth's most spectacular ‘man-made’ monuments. The sculptures, videos and digital collages comprising the exhibition delve into the reasons why heavenly bodies have bestowed such wondrous architecture upon our planet. Taking science fiction as New Age spiritual myth, Mutch documents contemporary consumerist approaches to the sacred, and the post-modern pastiche of religious symbols in sci-fi texts. Amidst the earnestness and monumentality of institutional approaches to ancient Egypt, Mutch presents a playful consideration of some of the alternative lineages of the Pyramids of ancient Egypt as they reverberate across popular culture, conspiracy theory and New Age spiritualism.
